CLASS SUMMARY:

Incumbents are responsible for operating and maintaining high speed, digital printing presses, wide format printer, and other types of print shop equipment to provide services for District-wide printing needs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Print Shop Technician is the second level in a three level print shop series. The Print Shop Technician is distinguished from the Print Shop Assistant by their digital printing press operation and maintenance responsibilities.  The Print Shop Technician is distinguished from the Print Shop Supervisor, which has lead responsibility.

Operates and maintains high speed digital press, wide format printer which  includes: setting up machines for correct size of paper or film; maintaining toners, waste containers to optimize print quality, prioritizing jobs and performing other related tasks.

Operates and maintains digital press, wide format printer, binders, cutters, and other print shop related equipment.

Assists in stocking printing supplies and paper.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

·       Methods for operating digital printing presses, wide format printer, and related print shop equipment

·       Basic mathematics

 

Skills (position requirements at entry):

Skill in:

·       Using equipment such as digital press, wide format printer,  binders, laminators, shrink wrappers, wire stitches, electric power cutters, paper drills

·       Fixing printing quality imperfections

·       Prioritizing work

·       Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

 

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):

High School Diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.), and two years of print shop related experience, including press operations and high speed copying, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

 

Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry):

None Required.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, chemicals, and intense noises.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
